Tragic: Student electrocuted while serving punishment in Edo


Tragedy struck at Oguola Primary School, Benin City, when a 14-year-old pupil (names withheld) was electrocuted within the premises of a Catholic Church.


The deceased teenager was said to be serving punishment handed him by his class teacher at the Father Tansi Catholic Parish on Aburime Street, near New Benin Market, in the state capital, when the incident occurred.


It was gathered that, the teacher had sent the boy out of her classroom to cut grass at about 10 am to cut grass as punishment for a yet to be ascertained offence.


Leadership reports :
It was further learnt that as the boy was cutting the grass near the statue of the late Fr Tansi, he saw and picked an electric cable off the floor, electrocuting himself in the process. The shouts from the deceased were said to have attracted those in the church as well as teachers and pupils in the school who rushed to the scene but were unable to save him.


The state police commissioner, Mr. Foluso Adebanjo, in a telephone chat, denied knowledge of the ugly incident.
